Private Clouding – Clearly a Good Idea or Just a Lot of Smoke? DoD Says It’s Worth Pursuing

Many computer vets complain that private clouding is merely something that happens outside of your data center and that the technologies have been around for years. But by creating cloud computing services, users will have all the capabilities without requiring all the abilities. InformationWeek recently talked about this debate and the great promise for enterprise computing. And as Bob Muglia, president of Microsoft’s server and tools division predicts, “All of our customers will have Windows servers on premises and, over time, add usage for cloud services”.

The Department of Defense is launching development and testing tools in order to test and deploy software themselves in order to avoid all usual security and stability obstacles they are constantly faced with. For over a year, DISA has been building the Rapid Access Computing Environment (RACE), the future private cloud of the military. Finishing touches are still up in the air, but the DoD’s plans for RACE should prove to be a positive step toward rapid innovation. Read more here.

Protect Yourself from Top Security Exploits

Well, here are the latest facts, as listed by Processor:

- Web 2.0 technologies are inspiring more attackers than ever, with about 20,000 pieces of malware launched in 2008 alone.

- Attackers are likely to target data warehouses and Web-based applications more frequently in the future, for financial gain.

- SMEs need a multilayered security strategy that involves an integrated appliance approach ad application security.

Experts say that despite the fact there are no real ground-breaking innovations in security exploits, there are still trends you need to keep track of. Attacks to yield financial returns are becoming more and more sophisticated, like the attack on Paypal, where the domain name, email fonts and even the language were almost a spitting image of the real thing.

SMEs and Web 2.0 technologies are also huge targets. Social networks users can be easily lured into a threat, without ever knowing what hit them. So how can you stay protected? Check out the article for more.

The Memory Battle: Is Bigger Really Better?

Does more memory make you groan with glee? Well, hold up, because it’s not always the size that matters, but it’s how you use your…er…stick that makes the difference, as Maximum PC points out.

They put DDR2 and DDR3 head to head for a careful comparison and as it turns out, there wasn’t enough of a difference to write home to momma. “From media encoding to application tests to games, DDR3 seemed to have no impact on performance over DDR2.” Why spend the extra money if you don’t have to, right?

So who wins in the DDR3/1066 vs. DDR3/1600? And the 2GB, 3GB and 6GB battle? You’ll be surprised at what could be considered overkill. Read on here.

Does Hard Work Pay Off Anymore?!

Well, despite what you might be feeling lately, many emails we’ve been receiving have confirmed that hard work still pays off in the end. Take these testimonials, for example:

"Just wanted to let you know that the CBT XPress Boot Camp experience was without a doubt fantastic! Although no one can prepare you for the pace at which everything comes at you, I was also amazed at the clarity of instruction and depth of explanation provided by our instructor. The dedication that was shown by him was second to none, when you consider that most nights he was there until 10:00 – 11:00pm.

From my initial contact with your representative, who also did an outstanding job, my interactions with the hotel staff, the course content, and the whole experience was definitely a worthwhile endeavor. I learned a lot, met some fantastic people, some of whom I think that I will keep in touch with. Although it was without doubt a lot of work, it was one that I would have no problem repeating."

"Just wanted to let you know that I passed and I’m an MCSE. I thought you guys delivered exactly what you said. The instructor was great! He really taught me what I needed and more to get the job done! The rest was up to me. It was really hard, but worth the effort."

Tech Toys

Here are a couple of tech toys that have nothing to do with each other, except that they are equally cool:

Mypressi Twist - The world’s first truly portable espresso machine has a pneumatic engine, so there’s no need for external power. Just when we were thinking of giving up caffeine (for a few days or hours maybe, just to see how it goes), now they make it that much easier to get a fix: just add hot water and coffee to your Mypressi Twist and you’ll look so much cooler doing it.

Seagate Replica - For the indecisive woman in you (or more precisely, the one that you’re dating or married to), the Seagate Replica is the perfect gift that keeps on giving…and taking and giving again. If you delete something and you wish you could take it back, it’ll return it to you. Just zoom back a few hours into the past and retrieve it. You can save your whole system if it crashes, too. Luckily, it only comes in one color so you won’t have to worry about trying to match it with the curtains.
